1. Introduction

The Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating system includes a modem program (called Dial-up Networking) that can establish network connections to the university's network and the Internet.  Through this network connection, software programs like Netscape Navigator, WS_FTP, and various email programs can communicate with other computers on the Internet.  If you want to install the Windows Dial-up Networking software, follow the instructions in this handout.

2. Things You Need to Know

Depending on what was included in your original Windows 95/98 installation, it will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete this document. Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
  • You will need a GatorLink account. A GatorLink ID will allow you to use the University's dial-up service. GatorLink accounts are available to all University faculty, staff and students. A GatorLink account can be created in a CIRCA campus computer lab, on campus (in person) at: CSE 214 or CSE E520 and on-line at: http://www.gatorlink.ufl.edu
  • You must have a modem capable of at least 9,600 (or higher) bps data transmission rate. Slower modems are unable to handle the large amount of data transferred in network connections in a reasonable amount of time. Refer to your computer and modem manuals to verify this requirement.
  • You will need programs such as Netscape Navigator to make use of the Internet. You will find a number of these programs on the UF Software CD.
  • You must have your Windows Installation files. These files are normally provided on an Installation CD, Installation diskette set, or the computer's hard drive. For instructions on how to find these files on the computer's hard drive, read section, How to find your Windows Installation files
  • Take your time and follow the directions in each section. Please, do not skip any sections.
  • If you are unable to connect to the university network after following these instructions, review the Troubleshooting section before calling the UF Computing Help Desk.
  • 3. Install or verify the installation of the Dial-Up Networking components

Before calling the UF Computing Help Desk for assistance, check to see if you have encountered one of the following error messages:
      1. The computer you're dialing into cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password and then try again.
      1. The black screen will not go away.
Uncheck the option Bring up terminal window after dialing. See the last paragraph in How to change your password.
