How to Obtain UF Software
March 22nd, 2006 |
The University of Florida maintains software licensing and distribution agreements to provide software to its faculty, staff, and students. Some licenses also include a "Home-use clause" that allow faculty, staff, and students to use some software off campus. The University provides software through these distribution channels:
- The UF Software CD
- The UF Software Licensing Services Department
- The CIRCA Computer Labs
- Department and Colleges
The UF Software CD is a collection of programs and documents that explain how to connect to and use the university network and the Internet. The UF Software CD is available for a nominal fee at the UF Bookstore. Complete instructions on how to install and use the software are contained on the CD and on the UF web site: http://www.circa.ufl.edu/cd-rom/. The purchase and use of the UF Software CD is restricted to UF faculty, staff and students for non-commercial use.The CD will work on Macintosh, DOS and Windows operating systems. The UF Software CD includes:
- Communication programs: FreePPP and CiscoRemote Lite (Instructions for setting up Windows 95/98/NT Dial-up Networking and Macintosh's Open Transport PPP are also included.)
- Web browsers: Netscape Communicator, and Internet Explorer
- ftp clients: WS_FTP Limited, and Fetch
- Telnet programs: Hummingbird's HostExplorer and NCSA Telnet and Brown's TN3270
- E-mail programs: Eudora Light, Pegasus and Pine
- Anti-virus software: McAfee's VirusScan
- Other programs and Utilities: QuickTime's Movie Player, Aladdin's Stuffit Expander, and Adobe's Acrobat Reader.
If you have Internet access and a web browser, then you can obtain software or information about software through the University of Florida's SLS. The SLS group gathers and publicizes information about existing and potential University of Florida software site licenses, bulk purchases, and agreements. The SODA Shoppe has an alphabetical index of software which includes all of the software that CIRCA distributes. Much of the Internet Software and Utilities from the UF Software CD is available for download at this site: http://www.software.ufl.edu/
To use the CIRCA Labs, you will need a GatorLink account. We recommend using Flash drives or CD's to save data as diskettes are highly unreliable.
To obtain Windows software, select the Software Distribution option from the Start menu.
To obtain Macintosh software, select the Software Distribution option from the Macintosh Apple menu. Read the Software Distribution Readme file before copying any programs.
Departments and colleges may distribute software to faculty, staff and students. Each department and college also maintains its own method of distribution. Contact their web site or office for more information.
Software is always distributed and used in accordance with the license agreement under which the software was purchased. As a general rule, these terms have the following meanings:
No matter what type of software you possess, alway read and adhere to its license agreement. If you violate the license agreement, you will be violating the law. DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE SOFTWARE
- Freeware software can be used free of charge.
- Shareware software can be used for a limited time before it must be purchased or removed from the computer.
- Commercial software must be purchased to be used.
- Site-licenses are renewable copyright issues and may expire. Once a site-license is discontinued then the software must be deleted.
Every faculty, staff and student should read the University's Official Software Copyright Policy available at: http://pirate.ifas.ufl.edu/
