Introduction

The CIRCA Internet Software Package is a collection of freeware and shareware programs provided to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Florida. These programs are intended for users who plan to use a modem to dial up and establish a network connection to a dialup service or use an ethernet card to establish a network connection to an ethernet service.

With one of these network connections, these programs will enable your computer to interact with other computers on the campus computer network and the Internet off-campus directly. Your computer will be able to browse the World Wide Web, transfer files to and from other computers, and access other computers.

In addition, an email program is provided for users with computer accounts with email services. This program may allow the sending and retrieval of email.

Computer requirements

We do not recommend using these programs unless your computer meets the following requirements:

Modem software

Modem programs are being distributed that can provide SLIP or PPP communications. Two of these programs are CiscoRemote Lite and Trumpet Winsock. For information on how to obtain and use a copy of CiscoRemote Lite, read the handout titled CiscoRemote Lite. CiscoRemote Lite is only available to the students, staff, and faculty of the University of Florida.

Trumpet Winsock is a shareware (not free) program that can be found on many ftp sites on the Internet. Ftp sites are publicly accessible file facilities that store and distribute information and programs. For information on how to obtain and use a copy of Trumpet Winsock, read the handout titled Trumpet Winsock.

Computer accounts

The Center for Instructional and Research Computing Activities (CIRCA) offers CIRCA Individual Dialup accounts and NERDC Basic Access accounts. These accounts can provide SLIP and PPP dialup services. CIRCA Individual Dialup accounts are available to faculty, staff, and students. NERDC Basic Access accounts are available to faculty, A&P staff, Health Center residents, post doctoral associates, graduate students and professional students. To apply for one of these accounts, come to room E520 CSE.

How to get the package

The CIRCA Internet Software Package is only available to the faculty, staff and students of the University of Florida. A copy of the package can be made in one of the CIRCA computer labs or obtained from the UF Computing Help Desk.

Anyone with a CIRCA account with micro lab services can copy the package to their own set of diskettes in one of the CIRCA computer labs. When you come to the lab to make your set of diskettes, bring four new 3.5" high-density diskettes and follow the directions in the handout titled How to obtain internet software in the CIRCA labs. This handout can be found in the CIRCA computer labs and at the UF Computing Help Desk.

You can also obtain a copy of the package from the UF Computing Help Desk in room E520 in the CSE building. Bring four new 3.5" high-density diskettes and your Gator 1 card. Your diskettes will be exchanged for diskettes containing the package.

How to set up the computer

Before the package can be installed, the files necessary to install the package must be copied into temporary directories on your computer's hard drive. We have chosen the c:\internet directory as the location for these temporary directories. To copy the files onto your computer's hard drive, follow these instructions:

  1. Close Microsoft Windows. The DOS command prompt will appear and will look similar to:c:\windows>.

  2. Place the first diskette into the disk drive and at the DOS command prompt, enter the two following DOS commands one after the other. (Press the Enter key after each command.)

    a:

    install

If you want the temporary directories placed into a different directory, then add the directory name to the install command. For example:

a:\install c:\directory-name

If the B drive is your computer's 3.5" floppy drive, place b: after the install command. For example:

b:\install b:

b:\install b: c:\directory-name

The process to copy the installation files onto your computer's hard drive will begin when you press the Enter key. Read the information on the screen carefully and replace the diskettes when prompted. The installation can be aborted anytime by holding down the Ctrl key and then pressing the c key.

The computer will be setup when the DOS command prompt appears. Enter the DOS command, c:, and remove the last diskette.

How to install the package

Now, each program will need to be installed. Start Windows and follow the installation instructions for each program.

Eudora Light

To install Eudora Light, select Run from the File menu in the Program Manager window. In the Run window, enter the command below and press the OK button.

c:\internet\temp1\setup.exe

During the installation, we recommend the following:

Netscape Navigator

To install Netscape Navigator, select Run from the File menu in the Program Manager window. In the Run window, enter the command below and press the OK button.

During the installation, we recommend the following:

Once the installation process is complete, the icons for Netscape Navigator will appear in the group window, Netscape.

Several problems can occur when installing Netscape Navigator. The most common problem is encountered when people do not close all other programs before installing Netscape Navigator. For example, many people have Microsoft Office running in the background of the Windows environment. You must close Microsoft Office before installing Netscape Navigator.

The second most common problem is that a group of files on your computer may need to be updated. These files are called Win32 files. If you need to upgrade these files, Netscape Navigator's installation program will inform you. We suggest that you download the upgrade to the Win32 files from Microsoft's ftp site.

The information and software necessary to upgrade your Win32 files are in a self-extracting file named pw1118.exe. The file is located in the directory, /softlib/mslfiles, on the ftp site's host name is ftp.microsoft.com. You can use the WS_FTP to download the file. Use the User ID: anonymous and the Password should be your email address.

EWAN

EWAN was included in our last version of the CIRCA Internet Software Package and was not updated. If you already have a working version of EWAN, skip to the next section.

To install EWAN, select Run from the File menu in the Program Manager window. In the Run window, enter the command below and press the OK button.

To create the group icon for this program, follow these instructions.

  1. Close all windows except the Program Manager window.

  2. Select New from the File menu. Choose the option, Program Group, and select the OK button.

  3. Type QWS3270 telnet in the Description field and leave the Group File field blank. Select the OK button and the group window will appear.

To create the icon for QWS3270, use these instructions.

  1. While the QWS3270 telnet window is open, select New from the File menu. Choose the option, Program Item, and select the OK button.

  2. Enter: QWS3270 into the Description field. Enter c:\internet\qws3270\qws3270.exe into the Command Line field. Enter: c:\internet\qws3270 into the Working Directory field. Enter: none into Shortcut key field. Select the OK button.
When you are finished, the icon for QWS3270 should appear in the group window, QWS3270 telnet.

Delete unnecessary files

Once you have successfully installed the programs, you will need to delete the unnecessary installation files to recover space on your hard drive. To delete these files, follow these instructions:

  1. Close Microsoft Windows. The DOS command prompt will appear and will look similar to: c:\windows>.

  2. Enter the command lines below and press the Enter key after each line. (Enter these commands CAREFULLY you cannot recover files after entering a deltree command.)

    deltree c:\internet\temp1

    deltree c:\internet\temp2

    deltree c:\internet\temp3

    deltree c:\internet\temp4

After entering each command you will be asked if you want to delete the directory and all files and subdirectories within it. Only answer yes if the directory matches one of the directories above. You answer yes by entering y and pressing the Enter key. You answer no by entering n and pressing the Enter key.

At this point, the program should be installed and the installation files should be removed from your computer's hard drive.

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER

Configuration information

Eudora Light and EWAN must be set up before they will work for you. Follow each set of instructions to set up these programs.

Eudora Light

When Eudora Light starts for the first time, an Options window will appear. The POP Account field must contain your email address. For example, if you have a CIRCA account with email services, your email address would be: username@grove.ufl.edu. If you have a NERDC account, your email address would be username@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu. Also, select the Hosts category and enter ufl.edu into the Ph Server field.

More information concerning how to use Eudora Light can be found in the Addendum icon in the Eudora Light program group.

EWAN

When EWAN is opened, a Connect to Site window will appear. This window is used to create and save configuration settings that allow you to connect to other computers on the campus network and the Internet off-campus.

If you have a CIRCA account with Grove computer access, you can use EWAN to connect to that computer by following these instructions. Press the New button. In the Address window, enter Grove into the Name field and enter grove.ufl.edu into the Network address or host name field. Press the OK button to save the information. Now, select Grove from the Connect to Site window to connect to the Grove computer system.

This procedure can be used to add other computers to the Connect to Site list. More information can be found in EWAN's Help menu.

Unzip

Unzip is a DOS program that unzips or decompresses files. It is located in the directory, c:\internet\compress. You will find that many files on the Internet are compressed. Read the file, c:\internet\compress\unzip.doc, to learn how to use this program.

How to use these programs

Before using these programs, you must fulfill the requirements mentioned at the front of the handout. Once those requirements are met, these programs can be used in the following way.

  1. Make a connection to your dialup service by using your modem software (CiscoRemote Lite or Trumpet Winsock).

If you are using an ethernet service, then you will need to start your networking software. Usually, this will automatically be done when you start your computer.

  2. Once the connection is made, minimize the modem program.

  3. At this point, use any of the programs in this package (Netscape Navigator, Eudora Light, QWS3270, . . . ).

  4. When you are finished, exit from each of the programs properly. (Read the section titled Word of warning regarding the closing of telnet programs like QWS3270 and EWAN.)

  5. After all of the programs are closed, disconnect your modem software. Remember, do not disconnect your modem program without closing the programs in this package first. This may cause you to still be logged onto other services.

If you are using an ethernet service, then you may need to close your networking software. Usually, this will automatically be done when you turn off your computer.

Word of warning

EWAN and QWS3270 are used to connect your computer to other computers on the Internet. It is important to remember to log off the computer system that these programs are connected to before closing the programs. Failure to do so may leave you paying for computer services after you have disconnected.

If you access your NERSP account using EWAN or your NERVM account using QWS3270, remember to log off that account before closing the programs. Logoff and logout are commands that inform the other computer that you are finished.

If you suspect that you are still logged onto a service, contact NERDC's Support Desk at 392-2061. Explain that you believe you are still logged on and request to be logged off.

Troubleshooting checklist

If you are having trouble installing the CIRCA Internet Software Package, check the following items before calling the UF Computing Help Desk.

  1. If the install instruction does not work when setting up the computer, be sure that the first diskette is in the floppy drive, Microsoft Windows is closed and you are running the install command from the DOS prompt.

  2. The installation programs will normally be placed into directories inside the c:\internet directory. Did you complete the installation by entering these commands?

    c:\internet\temp1\setup.exe

    c:\internet\temp2\setup.exe

    c:\internet\temp3\install.exe

    c:\internet\temp4\install.exe

If you installed the package into a different directory, then the commands above will be different. Replace the word c:\internet with the name of the directory you chose. For example, if I wanted the programs stored into the directory, c:\different, then my command line would appear as:

    c:\different\temp1\setup.exe

  3. If the programs do not work after they have been installed, make sure that you are using the SLIP/PPP program first. Remember, these programs will not work unless you are connected to the Internet first.

  4. If all of your programs are working, you should delete the unnecessary files that are on your hard drive. Read the section titled Delete unnecessary files to learn how this is done.

  5. If Eudora Light does not work, make sure the POP account information is correct. Read the Configuration information section about how to configure Eudora Light.

The UF Computing Help Desk telephone number is 392-HELP.
