There are two ways to enter (and print) text in Vietnamese. Either method works in all applications on all Macintoshes (except SEs) and printers in the primary CIRCA labs (Arch 131, Bryan 232, CSE 211, Weil 408). This handout describes the use of these methods.
This is the preferred method. It uses a special keyboard layout (VN
2) and a special TrueTypeª font (Vtopia). First, you use the keyboard
control panel to select the VN 2 layout, then you select
the Vtopia font in the application you are using.
Pull down the _ menu and select Control Panels. Open the Keyboard
control panel. Select the VN 2 keyboard layout. You don't need to
close the keyboard control panel. You can leave it open and drag it to
some convenient screen location for easy switching between the U.S. and
Vietnamese keyboard layouts.
The VN 2 keyboard layout is a modified QWERTY keyboard layout that accommodates
the Vietnamese alphabet and tone marks, as follows:

This method uses special bitmapped fonts. It might not always print
what you expect, however. In the application you are using, select either
the vietnamese or Vietscript font.

You can copy all of the fonts and the keyboard layout mentioned in this
handout from the PANDA file server in the CIRCA II zone, the Panda volume,
in the PUB:MAC:Foreign Language:Vietnamese: folder. See the handout, "Macintosh
Shareware," for instructions on how to use the PANDA file server from
a Macintosh in a CIRCA lab (or on UFNET).
