Norton's Utilities for Mac Diskette Repair February 2, 1993 |
Norton's Utilities is an easy-to-use diagnostic, repair and recovery utility designed to fix some types of diskette and file problems. It sometimes can recover deleted files and repair some crashed or damaged floppy disks. It is available in the CIRCA labs.
Norton's Utilities is located in the Macintosh:Utilities:Diskette
Recovery folder on the Lab Software volume in the CIRCA labs.
Double-click on the Norton's Utilities icon to bring up the main menu.
As stated in the menu, Norton's Disk Doctor repairs crashed or damaged
floppy disks and Norton's UnErase recovers trashed files. Click on the
icon that addresses your problem.
If your Mac refuses to open your disk and you get various disk error
messages, use Norton's Disk Doctor to diagnose and repair your disk. After
you have selected Disk Doctor from the main menu, you will be prompted
to pick a volume (or disk) to be diagnosed. Insert your floppy disk at
this time and click open.
This will bring up Disk Doctor's main screen.
Click start to begin the diagnosis and repairing process. Disk
Doctor keeps you appraised as it goes through a step-by-step process of
repairing your disk.
When Disk Doctor finds any problems on your disk, a dialogue box like
the one shown below will appear, giving you a description of the problem
and the option to correct it or not.
Once all problems have been corrected or passed over, you may select
Quit to return to Norton's main menu, or select More Info...
to see a written report of the diagnosis. Select Save As... if you
wish to save the report to read at a later date.
If you have deleted a file by dragging it to the Trash (and subsequently
emptied the Trash), the file's directory listing has been deleted but the
actual file data remains until it is eventually overwritten with new data.
If you discover that you want the file back, it is possible to recover
it by using Norton's UnErase. Once you have selected UnErase from the main
menu, you will be prompted to choose which volume (disk) you want to work
on. Insert your floppy disk at this time.
Note: Information that has been deleted on a subsequently active
disk might not be recoverable.
There are three UnErase options available to you. Quick UnErase
is the easiest. It simply searches for files of all types. File Type
searches for files belonging only to specific applications. A menu will
appear allowing you to pick a variety of Macintosh applications' files
to search for. Text Search looks for a specific textual entry or
buzz word in your file. A dialogue box will appear asking you to type in
the text you wish to search for. Use this option as a last resort if the
whole file cannot be found. Select the UnErase option best suited to your
needs and click OK.
Note: A dialogue box may appear informing you that UnErase works
best if File Saver protection is activated. File Saver is not available
in CIRCA labs.
Once Norton's has finished searching for erased files, it will compile
a list of files that can be recovered. The list is displayed in a screen
like the one shown below.
Selecting the file you wish to recover and clicking UnErase will
place the recovered file on the Mac's hard drive inside a folder
named Recovered Files. The Recoverability column in the UnErase
menu lets you know how effective the UnErase process was on each file.
A recoverability other than excellent means that part of the file might
have been overwritten.
Select Quit under the File menu when you have finished using Norton's Utilities. Norton's Utilities manuals are available in the CIRCA labs for more information.
