Macintosh Shareware February 14, 1997 |
Many developers offer software that you can copy, try and distribute free of charge. Although there is no charge for trying this software, copying software does not imply ownership. Information about charges and restrictions often appears on the screen you see when you open the software. The developer will provide a phone number or address for you to contact if you are unsure about fees or restrictions.
CIRCA maintains an online Macintosh software archive. This archive consists mainly of technical support files and internet related applications. You can download software from the software library using an ftp client (such as Fetch) or a web browser (such as Netscape) and the following URL:

Info Mac is a very large and comprehensive archive of Mac shareware and freeware. The original Info Mac archive is usually too busy to download from. However, there are many mirror sites that duplicate the entire contents of Info Mac and are updated daily. Here are the few of them in the USA that a CIRCA staff member was able to connect to around noon on a workday:
| Location | URL |
|---|---|
| Apple Computer, Cupertino, California | http://mirror.apple.com/Mirrors/ |
| University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois | http://uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu/info/highlights.html |
| MIT Laboratory for Computer Science, Cambridge, Massachusetts | http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html |
| Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon | ftp://ftp.orst.edu/pub/systems/info-mac/ |
| The Digital Dataplex, Austin, Texas | ftp://ftp.dataplex.net/pub/info-mac/ |
The Mac archive at the University of Michigan is the other large and comprehensive library of Mac shareware and freeware. It is usually too busy to download from, but here are a couple of mirror sites that duplicate the entire content of the original archive (and that you might be able to connect to):
| Location | URL |

| University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois | http://uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu/info/highlights.html |
