This handout can be found online at: | Macintosh Japanese March 9, 1994 |
This shows you how to install and begin to use the Japanese Language Kit in CIRCA labs. You will need to refer to the user's guide entitled, "Macintosh Japanese Input Method Guide." This guide is available in the labs and it will show you how to enter and edit Japanese text using the Kotoeri input method with the standard U.S. keyboard. Kotoeri's main function is to convert phonetic Japanese, or kana, into the appropriate Japanese characters, or kanji. It also gives you access to many other features including character palettes and a look-up facility that lets you find kanji by their radical. Kotoeri supports Katakana, Hiragana, two-byte Roman, one-byte Katakana, and one-byte Roman character types (and the direct Roman input mode).
Install the Japanese Language Kit
Open the Japanese Language Kit installer, as shown below:
The installer will:
1) Verify that there is a copy of the kit available for your use.
2) Copy the kit onto the Mac's hard drive.
3) Restart the Macintosh.
You can only use the kit with applications that support Apple's WorldScript system. One is WordPerfect for Macintosh. Another is TeachText Japanese. There may be others, so feel free to experiment. There are two ways that WorldScript-aware applications might let you enter and edit Japanese text - inline input or input window. WordPerfect supports inline input. TeachText Japanese supports the input window.
Inline Input
Open an application that supports the inline input of non-Roman languages, such as WordPerfect:
Once the application has opened its untitled document, you are ready to enter and edit U.S. English text, as usual. When you reach the point in your document that you wish to begin entering Japanese text, select Kotoeri in the Keyboard menu (near the right end of the menu bar):
WordPerfect automatically displays the operation palette and enters the hiragana input mode:
You are now ready to select a Japanese font and enter and edit Japanese text. You must refer to the user's guide to learn how.
Input Window
If inline input is not supported by an application or dialog box, the input window will be used. Inline input and the input window differ only in where the Japanese text is entered and processed. TeachText Japanese uses the input window. Select TeachText Japanese in the [[apple]] menu:
If you select the Kotoeri input method in the Keyboard menu, TeachText Japanese will display the input window:
IMPORTANT - When you are finished
Before you leave the Macintosh, you must select Restart in the Special menu (of the Finder). Otherwise no other Macintosh will be able to use the copy of the Japanese Language Kit that you were using:
You will need to refer to the user's guide entitled, "Macintosh Japanese Input Method Guide." This guide is available in the labs and at the UF Computing Help Desk.
