What is Fetch?
Fetch is a program that can transfer files between your computer andanother computer on the university network or the Internet. Fetch usesthe File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and can only be used with other computerssupporting FTP. The Internet has many computers that share files usingFTP.
How to Connect
- Open Fetch on your hard drive. A New Connection boxappears.
- In the host: field, type the name of the computer you want to transferfiles to.
- In the User ID: field, type in your username on that computer.
- In the Password: field, type in your password on that computer
- The Directory: field is optional. If you wish to transferfiles that are to be published to a web page, you can type public_html,the standard directory for web page storage on a UNIX system.

How to Transfer a file fromthe Hard Drive to your account
- Click on Put File...
- A window will pop up that shows the contents of your hard drive.
- Select the file that you want to transfer.
- A Put File window appears. (If you want to change the nameof the file, do so here. If you are transferring pictures, changethe format to MacBinary II. If you are transferring text, leave itas "text.")
- Select OK.
- The little dog icon (hence the name fetch) will move to tell you that itis transferring the file.
- You should see the file appear in the directory of your account.

How to Transfer a file fromyour account to the Hard Drive:
- Double click on the file that is to be transferred.
- A window will come up asking where the file is to be stored on the localhard drive.
- The little dog icon (hence the name fetch) will move to tell you that itis transferring the file.
- You should see the file appear in the directory on the hard drive.

Howto create a shortcut connection
- From the menu bar, click Customize.
- Select New Shortcut.
- A Bookmark Editor window should appear. In the Name: field,enter a name for the shortcut, such as groveornersp.
- In the Type: field, select File.
- In the Host: field, type in the host name of the computer you wishto create a shortcut for.
- In the User ID: field, type in your username for that computer. This field is optional, as you can choose to enter it each time you connectinstead of saving it.
- In the Password: field, type in your password for that computer.This field is optional, too.
- Leave the Directory: field blank. Below is a sample shortcut:

How to use the shortcutconnection- After opening Fetch, click File from the top menu bar.
- Select Open Shortcut.
- Click the shortcut you wish to connect to. If you did not save yourusername and/or password when creating the shortcut, you will be promptedfor either before the computer will connect.
