Macintosh System Errors April 23, 1993 |
Sometimes a Macintosh might stop running an application and display a system error code. Here is a list of some of the Macintosh system error codes and what you should do when you see them.
01: Attempted to use RAM that didn't exist. The Mac might be reporting the wrong error, or it is having hardware problems. Try B and C below.
02: Tried to write a word or long word at an odd address. Try B and C below.
03: Tried to execute an instruction that is not known. Try B and C below.
04: Tried to divide by zero. Try C and D below.
05: Range check error. Try C and D below.
06: Overflow error. Try C and D below.
07: Due to another error, the Mac tried to execute a Supervisor instruction while in the User mode. Try C and E below.
08: The Mac was placed in Trace mode, but a debugger had not been installed. Try C and D below.
09 or 10: An instruction was not found. Try B and C below.
12: A breakpoint occurred, but a debugger was not installed. Try C and D below.
13: A device attached to the computer (such as a keyboard or a disk drive) needed service by the Mac, but no routines were in RAM to tell the Mac how to service it. Try C and E below.
15: The Mac was not able to load a segment of an application. Try B and C below.
17 through 24: A part of the system software is missing. Try A and C below.
25: The Mac is out of RAM, or a previous error made the Mac incorrectly detect the out-of-memory condition. Try C and D below. Take low memory warnings from applications seriously ñ save and quit immediately.
26: The Mac could not begin execution of the opened application. Try B and C below.
28: The stack ran into the heap. Basically the same as 25 above.
Get a copy of the SysErr utility and look up the error code.
A. Reinstall your System software using the Installer on your System Tools diskette.
B. Recopy your application from its original disk.
C. Run the latest copy of Disinfectant to see if your Mac has a computer virus.
D. Call the technical support number for the application you are using.
E. Release your frustration and start over again.
