Macintosh Simplified Chinese May 2, 1994 |
This shows you how to install and begin to use the Chinese Language
Kits in CIRCA labs. You will need to refer to the user's guide entitled,
Macintosh Simplified Chinese Input Method Guide. This guide is available
in the labs and it will show you how to enter and edit Chinese text using
the Pinyin input method with the standard U.S. keyboard. A Chinese input
method looks up the Chinese characters that correspond to the Roman letters
or other special codes that you type from your keyboard, simplifying the
task of accessing more than 6,700 Simplified Chinese characters.
Open the Simplified Chinese Language Kit installer, as shown below:
The installer will:
1) Verify that there is a copy of the kit available for your use.
2) Copy the kit onto the Mac's hard drive.
3) Restart the Macintosh.
You can only use the kit with applications that support Apple's WorldScript system. One is WordPerfect for Macintosh. Another is TeachText Simplified Chinese. There may be others, so feel free to experiment.
There are two ways that WorldScript-aware applications might let you enter and edit Chinese text ñ inline input or input window. WordPerfect supports inline input. TeachText Simplified Chinese supports the input window.
Open an application that supports the inline input of non-Roman languages, such as WordPerfect:
Once the application has opened its untitled document, you are ready to enter and edit U.S. English text, as usual. When you reach the point in your document that you wish to begin entering Chinese text, select Shuru Fangfa in the Keyboard menu (near the right end of the menu bar):
Select Xianshi tiaoban from the Pencil menu:
Select Pinyin from the pop-up menu of the operation palette:
You are now ready to select a Chinese font and enter and edit Chinese text. You must refer to the user's guide to learn how.
If inline input is not supported by an application or dialog box, the input window will be used. Inline input and the input window differ only in where the Chinese text is entered and processed. TeachText Simplified Chinese uses the input window. Select TeachText Simplified Chinese in the _ menu:
If you select the Pinyin input method in the operation pallette, TeachText Simplified Chinese will display the input and selection windows:
Before you leave the Macintosh, you must select Restart in the Special menu (of the Finder). Otherwise no other Macintosh will be able to use the copy of the Chinese Language Kit that you were using:
You will need to refer to the user's guide entitled, Macintosh Simplified Chinese Input Method Guide. This guide is available in the labs and at the UF Computing Help Desk, E520 CSE.
