How to set up Pegasus Mail to read your E-mail
Pegasus Mail is an E-mail management program. It is designed to send and
receive email. It uses the POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
to read and download (move) all of your incoming messages and uses SMTP
(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) to send outgoing email messages.
Pegasus Mail appears as a shortcut in the Programs entries of
the Start menu in Windows 95/98/NT and in the Program Manager
window in Windows 3.1x.
-
Start Pegasus Mail
-
When it asks for the username, enter the username for the email account
you are currently using Pegasus to check.
-
Inside the main window, select the Tools pull-down menu and select
Options. This will display the Pegasus Mail Options window.
-
In the General tab, type in your Personal Name. This
is the name that will appear when you send out email messages.
-
Select the Network tab.
-
Type your E-mail address into the Your e-mail address is:
field:
-
For GatorLink, type: yourusername@ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: yourusername@grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: yourusername@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Type the pop server in the POP3 host field:
-
For GatorLink, type: pop.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Type your username in the User Name field. This is the name
in front of the @ in your Internet Email address.
-
Type the smtp server in the SMTP host field:
-
For GatorLink, type: smtp.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
When you check your mail (by default) Pegasus deletes the mail from the
mail server and keeps the only copy on the computer you are using.
This is our suggestion for new users that read their E-mail from one computer
most of the time.
However, if you are a more experienced user, you can choose
to leave the mail on the server to permanently leave a copy on the server.
To do this, click Advanced network configuration options.
Under Incoming (POP3) mail, unselect the option Delete mail from
host once successfully retrieved.
-
To easier remember how to get into Pegasus mail, it is suggested that you
change the profile name you were previously using to one that more accurately
reflects which account you are now checking. Select the Addresses
pull-down menu and select User Management. Highlight the username
for the account you used previously. Select Change.
Type in the username for your GatorLink account.
-
The other preferences are optional and can be set any way you like; however,
do not change these settings unless you know the full ramifications of
the choices. Here are a few options to consider:
-
You have the option of placing your password into the Password field.
This will give Pegasus the ability to remember your email address. (A word
of warning: If you use this function then anyone with access to your computer
will be able to download and read your mail. Also, people tend to forget
their password when they use this option.)
-
We highly recommend leaving the Check for new POP3 mail ____ sec idle
option set to zero(0). You should only
check your email when necessary in order to keep the server from being
bogged down. These options can be reset anytime you like (while Pegasus
is running) by selecting the File pull-down menu and the Network configuration
option.
