How to Set Up Navigator Gold to read E-mail
Navigator Gold provides an E-mail client to manage your E-mail messages.
To set up Navigator Gold to access your GatorLink E-mail services, follow
these instructions:
-
Start Netscape's Navigator Gold.
-
Inside the main window, select the Options pull-down menu
and Mail and News Preferences. This will display the Options
window.
-
Select the Options pull-down menu and the option, Mail and News
Preferences...
-
In the Preferences window, select the Servers tab.
-
Type the smtp server in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: field:
-
For GatorLink, type: smtp.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Type the pop server into the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: field:
-
For GatorLink, type: pop.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Type your username into the POP3 User Name: field. This is
the name in front of the @ in your Internet Email address.
-
The option, Messages are copied from the server to the local disk, then:,
you have two choices:
-
We strongly suggest using the setting, Removed from the server if
you read your E-mail messages from the same computer all of the time.
This will remove all of your E-mail messages from the GatorLink
mail server and download them to the computer you are using. This
will prevent messages from accumulating on the mail server.
-
If you access your mail from different locations most of the time, we suggest
the option, Left on the server. With this option, Navigator
will:
-
save a copy your E-mail messages on the hard drive of the computer you
are using.
-
leave the original E-mail messages on the GatorLink mail server.
This configuration gives you the ability to view your messages again
from other locations without loosing the original message. However,
here are a few things you must be aware of:
-
Navigator Gold stores a copy of every message you send and receive on the
hard drive of the computer you are using. If you are using a computer
that is not your own, remember to delete your E-mail messages before leaving
the computer.
-
Navigator Gold keeps track of whether or not a message has been downloaded
and will not retrieve a previously downloaded message using the Left
on the server setting. To retrieve previously downloaded messages
from the mail server, you must change this setting back to Removed from
the server.
-
Type usenet.nerdc.ufl.edu into the News (NNTP) Server:
field.
-
Select the Identity tab.
-
Type your full name (as you would want it to be seen) into the Your
Name: field.
-
In the Your Email: field, type your E-mail address:
-
For GatorLink, type: yourusername@ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: yourusername@grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: yourusername@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Leave the Reply-to Address: field blank unless you want your E-mail
delievered elsewhere.
-
The Your Organization: field is optional.
-
(optional) The Signature File: is a text file that can be added onto the
end of your E-mail messages. This is useful for people who want to add
information on the end of their messages regularly.
If you want more versatility in managing your E-mail messages or check
your E-mail from various locations most of the time, look into using IMAP
E-mail clients such as Netscape's Communicator, Paladin Email, and PC-Pine.
