How to Set Up Eudora Light to read E-mail
In Windows 3.1, Eudora light is installed into an Eudora Light
program group in the Program Manager window. In Windows 95,
an Eudora Light shortcut will be added to the Programs entries of
the Start menu. To set up Eudora Light to access your GatorLink
E-mail services, follow these instructions:
-
Start Eudora Light.
-
Inside the main window, select the Tools pull-down menu and
select Options:. This will display the Options window.
-
Highlight the Getting Started category in the left-side window.
-
Type your E-mail address into the POP account: field:
-
For GatorLink, type: yourusername@pop.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: yourusername@grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: yourusername@pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Type your full name (as you would like for it to be seen) into the Real
name: field. (i.e. John Gator Doe)
-
Type your E-mail address into the Return address: field:
-
For GatorLink, type: yourusername@ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: yourusername@grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: yourusername@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Highlight the Hosts category in the left-side window.
-
Type the smtp server in the SMTP: field:
-
For GatorLink, type: smtp.ufl.edu
-
For Grove, type: grove.ufl.edu
-
For NERSP, type: smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu
-
Enter ns.ufl.edu in the Ph: field. This Ph data base
may have old information.
-
Highlight the Checking Mail category in the left-side window.
-
Place an "X" in the Save password box if you want Eudora Light to
type in your password for you each time. Be sure not to forget your password
yourself.
-
We strongly suggest keeping the Check for mail every __ minutes
at the default zero setting. Eudora Light can only check for email
when you are connected to the Internet, and you should only check your
email when necessary to keep the server from being bogged down with unnecessary
inquiries.
-
Leave the Authentication style: set to Passwords.
-
When you check your mail (by default) Eudora Light deletes the mail from
the mail server and keeps the only copy on the computer you are using.
This is our suggestion for new users that read their E-mail from one computer
most of the time.
However, if you are a more experienced user, you can select the Leave
mail on server option to permanently leave a copy on the server, or
you can ALSO select:
-
Delete from server after __ days if you want to leave a copy of
your messages on the server for a specific amount of days.
-
Delete from server when emptied from Trash if you want your messages
left on the remote server for as long as you keep them on your PC.
-
Experienced users might also be interested in what the Eudora Light 3.0.x
Manual explains about the three options under the title: Determine first
unread message by:. Eudora has the capability to track
unread messages. This option allows you to select what constitutes an unread
message. The choices are as follows:
-
First message not read by this machine - any message not previously
read by this machine is considered unread.
-
Status: headers - any message not identified as read in the message
Status: header is considered unread. Old versions of Eudora
used this method exclusively.
-
POP3 LAST command - any message after the LAST downloaded message
is considered unread. This method is more efficient than the Status: headers
method when connecting to a POP server that supports the LAST command.
If you want to get all your messages on multiple PCS, select First
message not read by this machine and select Leave mail on server
on each PC.
-
Highlight the Attachments category in the left-side window.
-
Click the bar beneath the Attachment directory: and select a directory
to save attachments in. Eudora creates a directory named Attach
for such purposes. If you have a directory selected, Eudora Light
will "detach" files from the E-mail message and save them at this location
for your further use. Otherwise your message may be included in the
E-mail message.
All other settings are optional and are up to personal preference.
Eudora provides an illustrated manual for Eudora Light. It is distributed
in .pdf format and can be read by Adobe's Acrobat Reader. We encourage
you to read this manual for further information about how to use Eudora
Light. the manual can be found on the UF Software CD, on the Eudora
light web site: http://www.eudora.com and is part of some of Eudora
Light's installations.
