I. Introduction
The Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Operating System
has the capability of connecting your computer to the university's computer
network by accessing a modem pool provided by NERDC & GatorLink services.
This part of Windows NT is referred to as Dial-Up Networking
or Remote Access Server (RAS). Dial-Up Networking allows
individuals to connect to the Internet with programs like web browsers,
e-mail, telnet and ftp clients. This handout is designed to assist novice
computer users setup this portion of their Windows NT workstation.

II. Things you must know
Before using this handout, there are a few things that you
must be aware of:
- These instructions are related to the latest release of Windows
NT 4.0. You will need your Windows NT Workstation
CD and the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (or higher).
- It is strongly recommended that you install the Windows NT Service
Pack after installing the Dial-Up Networking software.
- These instructions are intended for stand-alone PCs without
direct network connections. If your computer is connected to an
existing network, have your network administrator review these instructions
before you begin. There may be security and installation considerations
that are not mentioned in this handout.
- We recommend using Dial-Up Networking with modems capable
of at least 9,600 bps (or higher) data transmission rates.
A modem can have two different transmission speeds, one for Fax
transmission speed and one for data (including everything else)
transmission speed. Refer to your computer and modem manuals to
verify the data transmission rate of your modem. Connections
with slower speed modems are possible but inefficient and time consuming.
-
Have your modem installed prior to installing Dial-Up Networking.
If your modem is not installed, the Dial-Up Networking installation
wizard will prompt you to install the modem.

III. How to verify that Dial-Up Networking
is installed

- Place the Windows NT Workstation CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Your Windows NT CD may automatically start a program when
it is first placed into the CD-ROM drive. Close this program.
- Double-click on My Computer and then click the Dial-Up
Networking button.
-
If the Dial-Up Networking software is installed, you will see the
Dial-Up
Networking window or a prompt to create a phonebook entry. Go
to section V.
- If the Dial-Up Networking software is not installed,
the following text will appear in a dialog box:
Dial-Up Networking connects you to remote networks
using, for example, your modem or ISDN adapter. Once
connected, your network applications work as if you
were directly connected to the remote network.
Dial-Up Networking provides Windows NT's PPP and SLIP
protocol support.
Dial-Up networking is currently uninstalled. Press
Install to install and configure.
- Press the Install button and go to the section titled How
to install the Dial-Up Networking software

IV. How to install the Dial-Up Networking
software
This section describes how to use the Dial-Up Networking
installation wizard to install the necessary Remote Access Server (RAS)
software. The Dial-Up Networking installation wizard will
automatically start when you:
-
Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. If your modem
is not installed, the following message will appear:
There are no other RAS capable devices to Add.
Do you want RAS setup to invoke the modem
installer to enable you to add a modem?
If you have an external modem, make sure
your modem is turned on. Answer Yes to the
question above to start the Modem
Installation Wizard. Information about
this wizard can be found in the "Modem
Installation Wizard" section.
If the installation wizard detects the modem, the Add RAS Devices dialog
window will appear. This window will list all of the devices on your
computer that can be used for Dial-Up Networking. Your modem's name
should appear beside the COM port number in the list.
-
Select your modem from the RAS Capable Device list and press
the OK button. The Remote Access Setup window should
appear next. This window is used to setup, modify, or move any of
your Remote Access Device configurations (settings). Your modem's name
should appear in the list. Make sure your modem is highlighted.
- Press the Configure button to confirm that the Port Usage
setting of modem's (COM) communications port is set to: dial-out
only.
- Click on the Network button to open the Network Configuration
window. Within this window, select the TCP/IP network protocol.
The IPX and NetBEUI protocols should not be checked.
-
Press the Continue button. When the installation is complete,
you will be asked to restart the computer. Remove the Windows
NT CD and press the Yes button. The necessary devices
and files should be installed once the computer reboots (restarts).

VI. How to turn-off the Call Waiting
feature
For those telephone lines with Call Waiting enabled, it is
strongly recommend that you turn off this feature temporarily while
your modem is in use. This will prevent dial-up interruptions.
Interruptions while you are connected can lead to file corruption and
over billing of service charges. These instructions show how to deactivate
Call Waiting temporarily while you are connected to GatorLink services.
Once you disconnect from GatorLink services, your Call Waiting services
will be restored.
Press the Location button in the Dial-Up Networking
window to open the Location Settings window.
In this window:

VIII. Why re-install the Windows NT
Service Pack 3
If you found it necessary to add the Dial-Up Networking
software in the "How to install the Dial-Up Networking software"
section, we strongly recommend reinstalling the Windows NT Service
Pack 3. The Service Pack 3 is designed only to update those
files it finds at the time of the update. Because you had to add the
Dial-Up Networking software and its related files, it is recommend
that you reinstall the service pack to update those files that were
missed the first time.
If you do not have a copy of the service pack, you can download a copy
from Microsoft's
web site.

IX. Modem Installation Wizard
The Windows NT Operating System uses the Modem Installation
Wizard to integrate modems into its system. Most manufacturers use
this installation wizard to install their modems. However, some manufacturers
use their own installation programs. We strongly recommend using
the modem manufacturer's installation instruction.
The Modem Installation Wizard can be launched by another wizard like
the Dial-Up Networking Installation Wizard or by the Add button
found in the Modem Control Panel. The modem installation
wizard has a diagnostic program that can be used to determine (or
estimate) which type of modem you have, and will help you determine
the appropriate modem drivers and configurations. This feature
can be turned off by selecting the setting, Don't detect my modem;
I will select it from a list. This option is normally checked
when you have the drivers that are offered by the manufacturer or
you know the modem manufacturer and model number.
