Many people install McAfee and never update it. To make sure that you get protection from this software. You can update McAfee the next time you are online.
For McAfee VirusScan v8.x, click the right mouse button while pointer is on top of the McAfee system tray icon and then select the Update Now option.
For McAfee Multiplatform Edition 4.5.1, follow these instructions
- Update the software. If you already have McAfee on your computer, check the version. To do this, double-click the VirusScan Console in the Systray (bottom right of screen) or open the VirusScan Console under Start/Programs/Network Associates. Select the Help Menu and the option, About. You will see a screen like the following:
If you do not have the current version of the software (v4.5.1 SP1), download it, or purchase the UF Software CD and install the software. The installation process will remove an outdated version.
- Update the scan engine and the virus definition files. If you have the current version of the software, but do not have the current version of the scan engine (4.1.60) or have not updated your virus definitions in a week, double-click "AutoUpdate" in the VirusScan Console and click the "Run Now" button. This will update both the engine and the virus definition files.
If this process is taking too long, another alternative is to download and install the SuperDat files from the UF Software Licensing Services McAfee page. The SuperDat files are the scan engine and virus definition files.
- Autoupdate the virus definition files. You should manually "AutoUpdate" (as above) or set your system to "AutoUpdate" at least once a week. New viruses come out all the time and this process will add new virus definitions to your scan. To autoupdate, choose a regular time when your computer will be on, open the VirusConsole, double-click "AutoUpdate" and click the Schedule tab. The time must be entered in military time.
- Scan email attachments. Only open email attachments when you are expecting them from a particular person. Although email attachments are scanned at the server for for IMAP GatorLink and NERSP users, you may want to enable McAfee's email scan of attachments. This works for POP mail software and for office networks running MAPI (MS Outlook) and Lotus cc mail. If this feature was installed, you can enable it by right-mouse clicking VShield in the systray (the "V" in the lower right of your screen), selecting "Properties", then "E-mail Scan". Click "Enable Scanning of email attachments" and choose "Enable Corporate Mail"(MS Outlook, Lotus on Exchange server) or "Internet Mail" (POP, SMTP).
