I. What is SSH Secure Shell?

SSH Secure Shell is an application protocol and software suite that offers secure network services for an insecure network such as the public Internet. It replaces other, insecure protocols and services, including Telnet and FTP. It can be used for remote terminal connections, remote file copying, and forwarding X11 sessions as well as arbitrary TCP ports through a secure tunnel.  SSH Secure Shell is based on strong encryption and authentication security features. The software has been developed in Europe and can be used in any country that allows encryption.  For more information on SSH Secure Shell, please visit the SSH Homepage.

II. What are the system requirements?

SSH Secure Shell software is available for a wide variety of hardware and software platforms. The Secure Shell concept was originated on Unix as a replacement for the insecure "Berkeley services", i.e., the rsh, rlogin, and rcp commands. The SSH Secure Shell client software (i.e., the component that remote users run on their computers) is available for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

The SSH Secure Shell for Workstation Windows client does not have any special hardware or software requirements. Any computer capable of running a current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system and equipped with a functional connection to a remote UNIX or UN*X-like host computer can be used.  The SSH Secure Shell for Workstations Windows client installation requires about 4 megabytes of disk space.
