I. What is Pegasus Mail

Pegasus Mail is an E-mail management program. It is designed to send, receive and manage your  e-mail messages.  It uses the IMAP and POP3 to manage and download your incoming messages and uses SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer  Protocol) to send outgoing email messages.

Pegasus can be used while your computer is not connected to a dial-up service both to read your already-downloaded mail and to write outgoing messages. Pegasus can then send pre-written email messages the next time you connect to the network or Internet. Pegasus will work with any email account that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols (like Grove, NERSP, etc.).

II. How to Install Pegasus Mail

During the installation process, you will be asked to select the components you want installed.
We recommend that you:
    • DO NOT install the Novell NetWare Support.
    • Select Install as default for Internet Explorer if you want to use Pegasus with Internet Explorer.
Windows 3.1x:
    1. Start from the Program Manager window.
    2. Open the File menu and select the Run option.
    3. In the Command Line box of the Run window, enter:

    4. Z:\SOFTWARE\PEGASUS\W16-312B.EXE
(Z represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).

    5. Click the OK button.

    6. Restart your PC after installation is complete.
Windows 95/98/NT:
  1. Select the Start button and choose the Run option.
  2. In the Open box of the Run window, enter:

  3. Z:\SOFTWARE\PEGASUS\W32-312C.EXE
(Z: represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.)

  4. Click the OK button.

  5. Restart your PC after installation is complete.

III. How to Set Up Pegasus Mail

The installation program will place the Pegasus Mail for Win32 Group name into the Start menu (Windows 95/98/NT) and in the Program Manager window (Windows 3.1x) under the group name Pegasus Mail for Win32.  Pegasus' setup program will start the first time you run Pegasus mail. You will need to enter a few settings before the program will work properly. The POP3 setup information is the same in Windows 3.1x and Windows 95.

How to Set up Pegasus to use IMAP services:
If you want Pegasus to use IMAP in place of POP then fill out the POP settings but do not include the POP server address or your usernmae or password.  Do supply the name of your SMTP server.  Once the Wizard is finished, follow these instructions to use the IMAP services provides by your  e-mail service.
  1. Select the Tools menu and the option, IMAP Profiles.
  2. In the IMAP Profiles Management window, press the New button and enter these settings:
    1. Profile Name:  I suggest any name that represents your E-mail service such as GatorLink or NERDC nersp or CIRCA grove.
      IMAP Server address:
      GatorLink Services: imap.ufl.edu
      grove accounts:  grove.ufl.edu
      nersp accounts:  imap.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
Other accounts:  Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
    1. Username and Passwords: Every account that provides mail will have a username and password. Place your accounts username and password when asked.
    1. Mailbox reference: This field is not usually required, but some servers may require assistance in locating the directory where your mail folders are located. In general, you should only enter a value in this field if instructed to do so by your ISP or network administrator.
GatorLink Services: Leave this setting blank.
      grove accounts:  mail/
      nersp accounts:  mail/
Other accounts:  Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.

  1. Check with your network administrator to see if the following can be selected.

How to set up for POP3 servers:

The following is our recommendation for setting up Pegasus Mail for POP3 services:  (If you want to use IMAP instead of POP3 services, then follow the alternative instructions regarding the IMAP set up.)

  1. When you start Pegasus for the first time, read the folder set up instructions carefully.
  1. Use the default folder path for your mail settings.
  1. If you select Multiple user for your Folder setup option, you will need to enter the list of users.  Give the person who will oversee the accounts (This will be you) Administrator Priviledges.
  1. When you first start Pegasus Mail, it will ask you for this information:
    1. Email Addresses:

    2.
      • GatorLink Services: johndoe@pop.ufl.edu
      • grove accounts:  johndoe@grove.ufl.edu
      • nersp accounts:  johndoe@pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
      • Other accounts:  Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
      1. POP3 servers:  (If you want to use IMAP instead of POP3 services, do not enter any thing into this field.)

      2.
        • GatorLink Services: pop.ufl.edu
        • grove accounts:  grove.ufl.edu
        • nersp accounts:  pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
        • Other accounts:  Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
      1. Username and Passwords: every account that provides mail will have a username and password. Place your accounts username and password when asked.  (If you want to use IMAP instead of POP3 services, do not enter any thing into this field.)

      2.
      3. SMTP servers:

      4.
        • GatorLink Services: smtp.ufl.edu
        • grove accounts:  grove.ufl.edu
        • nersp accounts:  smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu
        • Other accounts:  Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
All Manual changes can be made to the POP settings in the Network configuration option under File.
Use the Start Setup Wizard button to simplify the setup.

Other option can be configured under the Tool and Options menu.

    1. The other preferences are optional and can be set any way you like; however, do not change these settings unless you know the full ramifications of the choices. Here are a few options to consider:

    2.
      1. You have the option of placing your password into the Password field. This will give Pegasus the ability to remember your email address. (A word of warning: If you use this function then anyone with access to your computer will be able to download and read your mail. Also, people tend to forget their password when they use this option.)
      1. We highly recommend leaving the Check for new POP3 mail ____ sec  idle option set to zero(0). You should only check your email when necessary in order to keep the server from being bogged down.  These options can be reset anytime you like (while Pegasus is running) by selecting the File pull-down menu and the Network configuration option.

IV. How to Use Pegasus Mail

Pegasus Mail should work the first time you use it on-line or off-line.  However, you will not be able to read new mail or send any mail until your computer connects to the university network or the Internet. Any messages created off-line will be stored until you make a connection to the Internet and tell Pegasus to send the messages.

To check your IMAP mail services press the Work with your Mail Folders button and select the plus sign (+) next to the profile name you created.

Pegasus Mail provides a simple-to-read tutorial for the novice user. You can learn the basics in a matter of minutes and then learn more of the complex features later. The tutorial can be started (while Pegasus is running) by selecting the Help pull-down menu and choosing the Introductory Tutorial option. We strongly encourage you to use the tutorial. Additional information can be found in the Help files that are located in the Pegasus Mail for Windows program group/folder.
