Pegasus Mail is an E-mail management program. It is designed to send, receive and manage your e-mail messages. It uses the IMAP and POP3 to manage and download your incoming messages and uses SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) to send outgoing email messages.Pegasus can be used while your computer is not connected to a dial-up service both to read your already-downloaded mail and to write outgoing messages. Pegasus can then send pre-written email messages the next time you connect to the network or Internet. Pegasus will work with any email account that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols (like Grove, NERSP, etc.).
During the installation process, you will be asked to select the components you want installed. |
|
Windows 3.1x:
Z:\SOFTWARE\PEGASUS\W16-312B.EXE (Z represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). Restart your PC after installation is complete. |
Windows 95/98/NT:
Z:\SOFTWARE\PEGASUS\W32-312C.EXE (Z: represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.) Restart your PC after installation is complete. |
The installation program will place the Pegasus Mail for Win32 Group name into the Start menu (Windows 95/98/NT) and in the Program Manager window (Windows 3.1x) under the group name Pegasus Mail for Win32. Pegasus' setup program will start the first time you run Pegasus mail. You will need to enter a few settings before the program will work properly. The POP3 setup information is the same in Windows 3.1x and Windows 95.How to Set up Pegasus to use IMAP services:
If you want Pegasus to use IMAP in place of POP then fill out the POP settings but do not include the POP server address or your usernmae or password. Do supply the name of your SMTP server. Once the Wizard is finished, follow these instructions to use the IMAP services provides by your e-mail service.
- Select the Tools menu and the option, IMAP Profiles.
- In the IMAP Profiles Management window, press the New button and enter these settings:
- Profile Name: I suggest any name that represents your E-mail service such as GatorLink or NERDC nersp or CIRCA grove.
IMAP Server address:
GatorLink Services: imap.ufl.edu
grove accounts: grove.ufl.edu
nersp accounts: imap.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
Other accounts: Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
- Username and Passwords: Every account that provides mail will have a username and password. Place your accounts username and password when asked.
- Mailbox reference: This field is not usually required, but some servers may require assistance in locating the directory where your mail folders are located. In general, you should only enter a value in this field if instructed to do so by your ISP or network administrator.
GatorLink Services: Leave this setting blank.
grove accounts: mail/
nersp accounts: mail/
Other accounts: Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.![]()
- Check with your network administrator to see if the following can be selected.
- This server supports folders within folders. GatorLink only supports folders within the INBOX folder.
- Periodically update the INBOX view "INBOX" is the name most IMAP servers give to the folder where new and unread mail is placed on arrival. We recommend not selecting this option. Excessive querying of the INBOX can slow down services.
- Always connect to this profile at startup: If this control is checked, Pegasus Mail will mount this profile in your Folder Manager window automatically each time you run the program.
Only get folder status for INBOX when connecting Usually when you connect to an IMAP server, Pegasus Mail will ask the server for status information about each of your folders. It does this in order to present you with the total number of messages and unread messages in each folder. Processing these status requests can be quite slow, especially across dialup links: if you are finding that it takes a long time to connect to your IMAP mailbox, or if you only want to make a quick check for new mail, tick this control and Pegasus Mail will only ask for status on the server's INBOX (or new mail folder). This can result in a marked improvement in performance when connecting, at the price of not knowing how many messages are in any of your IMAP folders except your INBOX.
How to set up for POP3 servers:The following is our recommendation for setting up Pegasus Mail for POP3 services: (If you want to use IMAP instead of POP3 services, then follow the alternative instructions regarding the IMAP set up.)
- When you start Pegasus for the first time, read the folder set up instructions carefully.
- Use the default folder path for your mail settings.
- If you select Multiple user for your Folder setup option, you will need to enter the list of users. Give the person who will oversee the accounts (This will be you) Administrator Priviledges.
- When you first start Pegasus Mail, it will ask you for this information:
- Email Addresses:
- GatorLink Services: johndoe@pop.ufl.edu
- grove accounts: johndoe@grove.ufl.edu
- nersp accounts: johndoe@pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
- Other accounts: Verify this setting with your mail server administrator.
Other option can be configured under the Tool and Options menu.
Pegasus Mail should work the first time you use it on-line or off-line. However, you will not be able to read new mail or send any mail until your computer connects to the university network or the Internet. Any messages created off-line will be stored until you make a connection to the Internet and tell Pegasus to send the messages. To check your IMAP mail services press the Work with your Mail Folders button and select the plus sign (+) next to the profile name you created.
Pegasus Mail provides a simple-to-read tutorial for the novice user. You can learn the basics in a matter of minutes and then learn more of the complex features later. The tutorial can be started (while Pegasus is running) by selecting the Help pull-down menu and choosing the Introductory Tutorial option. We strongly encourage you to use the tutorial. Additional information can be found in the Help files that are located in the Pegasus Mail for Windows program group/folder.
