Netscape Navigator is a web browser capable displaying various files over the Internet. It incorporates the ability to launch other programs to display files that it cannot display and incorporates plug-ins made by other manufacturers to display information. Java is also supported. It is a product developed by Netscape Communications Corporation. This program is available free-of-charge.There are other web browsers on this CD. If you are uncertain of which web browser you should choose, read the file: BROWSERS.HTM

For Windows 95:
- 8MB of RAM (Minimum)
- 11MB of Hard drive space (Typical installation)
- 8.3MB of hard drive space for the installation software. (This space can be recovered after installation.)
- You will also need a means of connecting to the Internet using a modem dial-up service (such as Gatorlink's dial-up service) or an ethernet an ethernet cable service (such as DHNET's ethernet service).
- A modem and networking software package is required to use a modem dial-up service.
- An ethernet card and networking software is required to use an ethernet cable services.
We would like to make you aware of these recommendations prior to installing Netscape:
- Windows 95 users, if you are using any versions prior to this release, you will get multiple uninstall entries in your Add/Remove program. If you prefer not having multiple entries, you should do an uninstall to remove your previous version of Navigator before you install the new release.
- If you have deinstalled an earlier version of Navigator, reboot your system before installing another copy of Navigator. Files might exist that cannot be deleted until your system is rebooted.
- During the installation process, select to read the README files that accompanies Netscape. It contains additional information about the installation and use of Netscape Navigator. + Read the Software License Agreement. It warns you of copyright laws and informs you of your rights to use the product.
- We recommend using the Typical Install. The Custom Install will allow you to pick what components you want and do not want installed.
- The Setup Associations window configures your computer to automatically launch Navigator when a specific file type (.jpg .htm, ...) is opened. If there are any file types listed that you do not want associated with Navigator verify that they are not checked.
- Reboot the computer after the Installation process.
For Windows 95/97/NT:1. Select the Start button and the Run option.
2. In the Open box of the Run window, enter:Z:\SOFTWARE\NET\WIN9X\N32D408.EXE3. Click the OK button.
"Z" represents the CD-ROM drive letter.
There are several settings in Netscape Navigator that can be personalize to your liking. We give these suggestions.
Using the Profile ManagerThe User Profile Manager is used to personalize and setup Navigator. It is used to create a place to store your Navigator settings. This program will start the first time you open Navigator.
Double-clicking on the User Profile Manager in Navigator's folder (on the Start menu) can also launch this Setup program. The User Profile Manager will ask and you many questions read the information given prior to entering information. We offer this information to help you answer the questions:
- Your complete address will be in one of the following forms, If you have a:
Gatorlink service: username@ufl.edu
Grove account: username@grove.ufl.edu
NERSP account: username@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu
Other accounts: username@computer.nameThe text, username, should be replaced with your account's username. The text, computer.name, will be the address provide by your mail administrator.
- The Profile name should be a Name you associate with yourself. We recommend using the default information provided.
When you press the Finish button. This will load Netscape Navigator. If your computer is not already connected to your dial-up service, then Netscape will give an error message -- this is K**... Just close the files and restart the computer
Most of the functions of Navigator can be learned through trail and error. Many of the buttons are intuitively learned. If you do not understand a particular function, Netscape maintains a large documentation library on-line covering topics including 'How to use Netscape' and 'How to create your own Web pages'.This information can be viewed by selecting subjects from Netscape's Help pull-down menu while your computer is connected to the Internet. We recommend using these menus to learn how to use Navigator.
For Windows 95
- Press the Start button.
- Select Settings and then Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs shortcut.
- The Add/Remove Programs Properties window is used to remove programs from your computer.
- To remove a program using the Install/Uninstall tab:
- Scroll-down the list of installed applications.
- Select the program you want to uninstall.
- Press the Add/Remove button.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- We recommend removing one program at a time and Restarting the computer after removing a program.
Netscape Navigator is developed through Netscape Communications Corporation and is under constant development. The latest versions of this program are made available through the:
