Netscape Navigator 2.02 is a nationally known World-Wide-Web browser capable of downloading and presenting different types of files found on the
Internet. It can also download and send email and news group messages.  There are two other versions of Netscape available from the UF Software
CD. To determine which version is right for your computer, please read the Netscape Help file called Which Netscape Should You Pick.

III. How to Set Up Netscape Navigator 2.02

Very little setup is necessary, and most of Netscape's Preferences are up to personal preference. Below we give directions on how to set up Netscape
mail and news. Other email programs have been included in the UF Software CD. If you have chosen to use Netscape Navigator's email functions,
then you may want to use the following setup instructions.

How to setup the Mail and News Preferences:

    1. Start Netscape Navigator.
    1. Select the Options pull-down menu and the option Mail and News Preferences...
    1. In the Preferences: Mail and News window, select the Servers tab.

    2.
      1. Enter the last part of your email address in the Outgoing Mail(SMTP) Server: field (the part of your full email address after the "@" symbol). If your account is on a UNIX computer, be sure to enter the SMTP server name in all lowercase letters.  An example would be: nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu

      2.
        • pop.ufl.edu                     (Gator link services)
        • pop.nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu  (NERDC NERSP accounts)
        • grove.ufl.edu                  (CIRCA Grove accounts)
      1. Enter this information in the Incoming Mail (POP) Server: field.

      2.
        • smtp.ufl.edu                  (Gator link services)
        • smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu         (NERDC NERSP accounts)
        • grove.ufl.edu                 (CIRCA Grove accounts)
      1. Enter the username of your email account (the part of your email address before the "@" symbol) in the POP user ID field.

      2.
      3. In the "Messages are copied from the server to local disk, then:" field, you have two choices.  We strongly suggest using the setting, Removed from the server. This downloads the email to the computer you are at and deletes it from the computer on which you have your email account. This does make it so that if you have       read an email you would not be able to read it again from any other computer, but it helps prevent you from running out of space on the computer account that receives the email.

      4.
      5. We strongly suggest leaving the Check for mail every: ___  minutes  field set to Never.  Checking mail only when you need to  helps to keep the email server from being bogged down.

      6.
      7. Type into the News (NNTP) Server: field:

      8.
        • news.ufl.edu              (Gatorlink services)
        • usenet.nerdc.ufl.edu   (Any NERDC account)
    1.  Select the Identity tab.
      1. Enter your full name as you would want it to be seen in the Your Name: field.

      2.
      3. In the Your Email: field, enter the complete email address you tell people to send messages to. If your account is on a UNIX computer, be sure to enter the email address in all lowercase letters. Examples would be:

      4.
        • johndoe@ufl.edu                     (Gator link services)
        • johndoe@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu  (NERDC NERSP accounts)
        • johndoe@grove.ufl.edu            (CIRCA Grove accounts)
      1. Leave the Reply-to address: field blank.

      2.
      3. The Organization: field is optional.

      4.
      5. (optional) The Signature File: is a text file that can be added onto the end of your email messages. This is useful for people who want to add information on the end of their messages regularly.

      6.
      7. Click the OK button.
