Internet Explorer is a nationally known web browser capable of downloading and presenting different types of documents and graphics found on the Internet. It also manages E-mail and News-group messages and creates publishes web pages using companion software.
All programs included in the Internet Explorer package are designed to work with one another.There are six components in Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 3.1x. You can select any of these programs to install:
- Microsoft Outlook Express: an E-mail program (client) capable of retrieving, displaying, composing and sending mail and News messages. It can use the POP3 and SMTP protocols.
- Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard: This is a TCP/IP Stack and Dialer used to access the Web.
- Microsoft VM for JAVA is the software capable of running files using the Java program Language. Java is embedded in some HTML files.
- Channel is program that subscribes you to Web sites designed to deliver content from the Internet to your computer, similar to subscribing to a favorite Web site.
- Real Player is a program designed to display Real Audio and Video streaming content on the web.
- Subscription Manager allows you to update your software on a timely basis that you choose.

- 16MB of RAM (to use Microsoft VM for Java)
- Hard drive space requirements during installation: 25-74MB depending on components added.
We recommend the following advice during the installation:
- Read the Software License Agreement. It explains your rights to ownership of the program.
- In Windows 3.1x, Internet Explorer lets you select the components. Only select those components you want.
- Unless you have a need to store Internet Explorer in a certain location on your Hard drive, use the default directory provided.
- Let the installer Restart your computer after installation is complete.
- Start from the Program Manager window.
- Select the File menu and the Run option.
- In the Command Line box, enter:
Z:\SOFTWARE\MSIE\WIN3X5\SETUP.EXE
"Z" represents the CD-ROM drive letter.
- Click the OK button.
The first time you double-click the "Connection Wizard" or "Outlook Express" icon, a Set up Wizard will start. The following information is provided to assist you in answering the questions you will be asked.
Almost all information can be found in the Help Menu regarding how to use Internet Explorer and its companion programs. Each program is relatively easy
to use. A web tutorial is available in the Help menu of Internet Explorer.To manually dial-in to NERDC Dial-up Services or your GatorLink Dial-up Services follow these directions:
- Double click the GatorLink Dial-up Services icon or NERDC Dial-up Services icon.
- Press the Connect button. A terminal window should appear.
If the window does not appear, press the Properties button. In the General properties window, select the setting, "Bring up terminal window after dialing". Then press the Close button and try again.
- In the terminal window, enter your Username and Password when prompted. If you have a GatorLink account, append the characters: /I to your username. This informs the server that you have a GatorLink account
- At the NERDC-AS#> prompt, type the letters: PPP
- Press the Continue button. You should now be connected to the Internet.
- Open The Internet Explorer program Group
- Double-click on the "Uninstall" icon.
Internet Explorer is developed by Microsoft Corporation and is under constant development. The latest versions of this program are available at the following locations:
