I. What is Eudora Light

Eudora Light is an electronic mail management program E-mail client.  It can send, receive, and organize your E-mail messages.  This program uses POP3 and SMTP protocols to receive and send messages, respectively.

People who access their mail from one location are best suited for mail programs that use the POP3 protocol.  GatorLink services, CIRCA grove accounts, and NERDC nersp accounts provide mail servers that use the POP protocol. Faculty, staff, and students of the University of Florida can freely use this program for non-commercial purposes.

II. Program Features

Eudora provides a wide variety of features including:

VI. How to Set Up
To start Eudora Light, select the Start menu and the options: Programs, Eudora Lite, and Eudora Light.

Note: The first time you start Eudora Light, you will receive a message window that informs you that Eudora is not currently the default mail program. We suggest answering "No" to this question until you are sure that Eudora is the E-mail management program you want to use. If you answer "Yes", then Windows will use this program to send E-mail messages.

The Options window should automatically appear. If the Options window does not appear, select the Tools menu and the option, Options. In Options window, fill-in this information:

  1. Select the "Getting Started" category.
    1. Select the "Hosts" category.
Enter the name of your smtp server into the SMTP field. (use lowercase letters) For:

    GatorLink services:    smtp.ufl.edu
    CIRCA grove accounts:  grove.ufl.edu
    NERDC nersp accounts:  smtp.nerdc.ufl.edu
Other accounts: Check with your account administrator.

    1. Select the "Checking Mail" category.
      1. If you want Eudora Light to send your password automatically when you check your E-mail, then check the Save Password box. (Be sure not to forget it yourself),
      1. We strongly suggest keeping the "Check for mail every __ minutes" at the default zero setting. Eudora Light can only check for E-mail when you are connected to your dial-up service. You should only check your E-mail when necessary to keep the server from being bogged down.
      1. Verify that the Authentication style is set to: Passwords.
      1. Leave the other settings as they appear.  If you want to know more about these settings look under the Help menu.

    1. Select the "Attachments" category.
Click the bar beneath Attachment directory and select a directory for all attachments to be saved in. Attachments are (programs, images, word-processed documents, etc.) files that are "attached" to E-mail. If you have this directory selected, Eudora Light will "detach" the files from the text message and save them at this location for your further use.

Select the "MAPI" category.  Many Window products have a Send button in their File menu.  If you want Eudora to appear when this button is pressed then check the "Always" box under the "Use Eudora MAPI server".

All other settings are optional and are up to personal preference.

VII. How to use

Most of Eudora Light can be learned through trial and error. The program is simple to use and provides a "How to" section. Select the Help menu and the Topics option.

A manual is also available for download at: http://eudora.qualcomm.com/eudoralight/
or on the CD in the folder: Z:\SOFTWARE\EUDORA\WLIT3MAN.PDF
