How To Install Virex on Your Macintosh

I. What is Virex?

The University of Florida has arranged a 3-year site license for Virex software. Virex is an anti-virus program capable of detecting and removing computer viruses. McAfee Software Inc. is a leading international supplier of enterprise-wide Network Security and Management software.

Virex is available to all university departments. The Virex site license includes a Home Use Option. This permits faculty, staff and students of the university to use Virex at home.

II. How do I install Virex?

Before installing Virex, quit all programs you have running including any virus protection software. 

If you are not using Mac OS 9.1 or lower, then follow these instructions:

  1. From the UF Software CD, open the Virex folder.
  2. Double-click on the file: Installer. McAfee Virus Scan will install over any old versions of the software.

To update the Virus Definitions:

  1. Open the Virex folder.
  2. Double-click on the file: Virus Definitions 2003-07-01.

If you are using Mac OSX, then follow these instructions:

  1. Open the Virex 72 for MAcOS X folder.
  2. Drag and drop the Virex7.gz file onto the desktop and double-click the file to decompress the file.
  3. After the program decompresses, double click the Virex7.pkg file.
  4. If present, press the Click the lock to make changes button. Depending on how your computer is set up you will need to enter your Administrative password.
  5. Read and agree to the license agreement.
  6. Select the Hard drive as the location where the software should be installed.
  7. After installation restart your computer.

To update the Virus Definitions:

  1. Open the Virex 72 for MacOS X folder.
  2. Drag and drop the V7030709.gz file onto the desktop and double-click the file to decompress the file.
  3. After the program decompresses, double click the V7030709.pkg file.
  4. If present, press the Click the lock to make changes button. Depending on how your computer is set up you will need to enter your Administrative password.
  5. Select the Hard drive as the location where the software should be installed.
  6. After installation restart your computer.

III. How Do I Use Virex?

As soon as your computer is turned on, Virex scans and monitors your computer RAM and hard-drive memory. It is automatically configured and needs little user interaction. To learn more about the product, read the ".PDF" formatted file located on the UF Software CD. See the "How toInstall Acrobat Reader" file for more information on reading ".PDF" formatted files.
